monsters - Where does the distinction between Mind Flayer and . . . I know that a Mind Flayer is an Illithid, and vice versa And I know in some of the D D fiction, like Forgotten Realms and the like, that Mind Flayers refer to themselves or their race as Illithids, but where does this distinction originate from?!
How can I help my PCs fight against a Mind Flayers psionic blast? The wizard attacked the Mind-Flayer with a fireball Angering but not seriously harming it On the Mind-Flayer's turn it used it psionic blast spell-like ability targeting the wizard and anyone that happened to fall in that area of effect The wizard, bard, and paladin (along with a bunch of orcs) were all within the area of effect
What level should my players be when they face mind flayers? When the players finally unravel the mystery, I'll have them enter either the blacksmith shop or the government base, both entrances to the makeshift mind flayer colony This is where my problems come up The players will be level five by then In the DMG (while describing players level 5-10) it states the following:
Can one capture the soul or spirit of a dying Illithid mind flayer . . . 8 Do illithids or 'mind flayers' have a spirit or soul to be captured in a Ring of Mind Sheilding? Is there a low CR monster similar to mindflayers? What I need is a mind flayer type monster, but significantly weaker Does such a monster exist already? The campaign The party will be level 5 at the start and have between 3 or 4 members backed by some weaker horde units in larger engagements The enemies they are facing represent an entire police force
