GoldWave (like most audio editors) uses 32-bit floating-pint internally This makes DSP (digital signal processing) "easier" and it insures that the waveform doesn't clip (overload distort) during processing What you are hearing is quantization noise, which is the result of the stair stepped digital waveform
Question about Editing and Size of MP3 files - GoldWave Inc. by GoldWave Inc » Tue Apr 18, 2006 2:45 am Actually editing would make the file smaller, if you are deleting sections Adjusting the volume and removing the hiss wouldn't increase the size of the file and may result in better quality when the file is saved as MP3 By default GoldWave uses a bitrate of 128kbps for MP3 files

GodWave v6. x VST regression - GoldWave Inc. As you can see, GoldWave v6 x inserts a huge portion of silence at the beginning of the file, while GoldWave v5 x didn't do so So, in v6 x the audio gets shifted behind, while in v5 x everything remains perfectly aligned! Looks like a bug regression in delay handling
