Increasing dissent amongst birders regards taxonomic changes and . . . A letter from Peter Smith within 'Birdwatch' magazine delivered today, epitomised what some birders at least, seem to feel, and I thought it was worth highlighting here Even though it represents just one person's view, I get the feeling a lot of birders feel something similar, but of course I cannot quantify the level of discontent
AviList taxonomic decisions relevant to British birders and . . . - BirdForum I appreciate most British birders will be aware of these changes anyway, but based on this summary, what has happened to Yelkouan Shearwater? Does this mean it has not been voted on for now? Rumours were strong that it was being imminently lumped with Balearic Shearwater (or with both now being called Mediterranean Shearwater)
Birders Lifelist - should heard birds be counted? - BirdForum Italian birders usually count heard birds, but as others have said I don't tick a lifer unless I have seen it, although a heard only known species will go on my year list There are some exceptions though: I have ticked Corncrake even if we only heard it in Scotland, but it couldn't have been anything else and it was literally one metre away

Bird Watcher vs Birder - BirdForum Birders refer to themselves as birders That said, I've always preferred to be understood as someone who values watching birds over ticking off a list (tho I do keep a life list and will admit to enjoying seeing it grow and keeping 'score') So in that respect I sometimes say I'm a bird watcher to make that distinction
Attributes of a good birder? - BirdForum A lot of the birders on this forum are extremely knowladgable, and some are still learning from the beginning What seems to be universal among all these different levels of birders is that learning is driven by enthusiasm I have every faith that there are some young teenage birders naturalists around that have learn't more in their early years
The popularity of birdwatching by country | BirdForum In the UK, a busy reserve doesn't necessarily mean a lot of birders In a place like Minsmere the majority of visitors will be birders, but in somewhere like Fen Drayton RSPB, which has a central car park and no entry fee, it can be packed with dog walkers and strolling families with hardly any birders to be seen
Famous or celebrity birders. - BirdForum Oddly enough the Bristol Evening Posts Bristol City reporter Andy Stockhausen is a birder and a very nice man too, I met him on one of the first Scillionian trips there's no Bristol Rovers birders (they're all too busy perfecting their trademark silky skills of course)
What countries or regions are good for solo birding? - BirdForum These are much easier for two driving birders changing at the steering wheel And splitting the cost of car rental is also helpful During our time in Argentina, we were plagued with unreliable flights and car hire agencies, so having two people to alternately argue about the next logistical problem was also less tiring
