I'll put my vote in for Hood River - there are some great brewpubs with views of the gorge and you'll often see people out windsurfing if the weather cooperates Not to mention it's a quaint downtown with several little jewelry shops etc It's a good hour in from Portland so I find it a good stopping point as the gorge loses a lot of it's luster as you approach The Dalles
