It was a short linear tracking arm, so the VTA changed a lot due to changes in record thicknesses I set the tone arm for 200 gram records, and had two vinyl spacers (like thin mats) that I used under normal weight and 180gram records to adjust the VTA I now have a VPI rig that allows me to change VTA far more easily

Different cartridges and different stylus shapes react quite a bit differently to VTA changes Three of my favorite cartridges require a certain VTA setting of level +1 2 mm to sound their best Lowering or raising them by 1 mm or so changes the sound unacceptably One cartridge I had wasn't finicky at all with VTA and sounded the same + - 2mm
