I am not sure if roundcube automatically configured it's own SMTP as well as IMAP setting for given host name I need to know if i need to change somewhere some value to make SMTP setting work?

Roundcube is an IMAP client You do not manage users via it There is no admin user or admin panel You need to create your users on the IMAP server that Roundcube is configured to connect to and then login using those creds to login to Roundcube

The `default_host`, `default_port` and 'smtp_server' where all removed in Roundcube 1 6 as described in the release announcement I guess you upgraded from an earlier version and thats where you got the old vars from

Why Roundcube thinks that the smtp server does not support authentication is a mystery to me I have set verify_peer to false to obviate any issues with the self-signed cert

When I enter my username in roundcube, I get a red message: "your session is invalid or expired" and I stay on the login page I tried several configuration changes, especially imap_auth_type without any results

The fact you have a etc roundcube dir makes me think may be you installed Roundcube from a package, I guess one created by the Ubuntu community In that package the location of things like configs has been changed from the default to what ever fits with their environment I think if you are trying to update that packaged version using the original version of Roundcube that's why you are
