I definitely use "I forgot" way more (and more naturally), but I do sometimes make the conscious decision to say "I've forgotten" to change the style of my speech depending on my environment social context But, totally agreed - for u amiasi, use whichever one you want, and yeah, "I forgot" is much easier to say, even for us!
