Part of it depends on what brand of downriggers you are running I believe the cannons need wire for their electrical auto stop feature to work For everything else I think there is advantages braid, especially of the thinness of braid I like less blowback and did not lose a downrigger ball for a few years when I switched to braid after seemingly battling frayed cable all the time
