03 28 22 11:04 AM 29 posts I was in Florence and Milan the first week of January I also prefer to use my American Express card, but always carry a Visa just in case Between hotels, museum entries (pre-booked and walk-in), restaurants, trains, taxis, and miscellaneous shopping, I probably was able to use my AMEX about 75% of time

American Express is actually more widely accepted in Europe than Visa, or so it seemed I was able to use my Visa more than my AmX in Italy this past summer I prefer the AmX for points so really do try to use it whenever I can Hard to compare year to year, but felt like Italian merchants were more restrictive than merchants in other countries

10 04 10 07:52 AM 23569 posts The VISA and MasterCard are cards of choice in Europe AE will be accept at higher end establishments especially five star hotels and fine restaurants but for the most part it is a dead card Also believe that the currency conversion fees on AE are high You would be better served with VISA or MasterCard

632 posts janet in the 60's the Spanish Steps became a hangout for the traveling Americans (including lots of long haired hippies) because of the Amex office you could get your mail, change money or buy travelers checks there, or make travel arrangements (and if you had an Amex bank account, which I did, you could cash checks there easily)
