The next step would have been to write a small shell script that would open darktable for the selected images, and update the previews after darktable closes You can then 'open with' this script instead of with darktable directly to automatically update the previews after editing

Darktable is primarily a Raw processor, Gimp is a raster graphics editor I believe Gimp has plugins that will automatically open a Raw processor (if installed) if you try to edit a Raw file, but it can't directly edit a Raw file by itself

Darktable's looks too muddy in comparison when looking at details I can't seem to get the same results with darktable's sharpening or defringing tools But then RawTherapee is honestly a pain to use The modules are a lot slower and more annoying to use than Darktable They feel clunky and outdated Darktable feels more modern, fun and faster
