Changing the oil in the BMW X5 engine should be carried out on a warmed-up engine (this contributes to a faster and better flow of lubricant) It will also flow out faster if the dipstick is first lifted and the filler cap is unscrewed

Those oil certification and oil weight is very independent My old BMW use BMW LL01, one calls for 0W40 5w30, the other calls for 10W60 I will not swap the oil weight between them BMW LL cert is just a bunch of test procedure to meet BMW criteria Weight of the oil has a lot to do with the design of the engine AND how hot you are operating the

Wow, curse BMW for making it so hard to figure out which oil is recommended! My glovebox manual says that "up to 1 quart" can be topped up with BMW Longlife-01 FE or BMW Longlife-17 FE+ I'm assuming either of these are fine for oil changes with the X5 40i - but I wish BMW was a little less obtuse
